Employability

Inclusive Practice

During the year at University, I have undertaken an Inclusive Practice module. Through this module, we took part in several workshops; These workshops were to help us if we wanted to go out into the community and took coaching or PE sessions to get everybody included.

One workshop that we took part in was with an ex UK wheelchair basketball player who now goes around the country coaching and teaching his skills and past experiences. He explained that there are people out there who don’t have disabilities usually associating with the sport that still want to take part and can take part.

Another workshop we took part in was a change for life scheme which talks about how we need to be inclusive for people with disabilities so they are able to take part in sessions alongside able-bodied people. This went into depth by providing us with tools and equipment we can use to promote inclusion within sport, and provided us with knowledge of why it is important that inclusion is met within PE lessons or coaching sessions within the community.

For me, it has taught me that as a coach, you have to cater for everybody and have to plan what you’re going to do for every possible situation. You may get participants who are not able to do certain things you have planned for and have to be prepared to get them included into the session in another way, without making them feel different to the others.

I believe this has made me more employable as it has taught me that i always need to be prepared and have plans there for if plan A doesn’t necessarily work. As an employee, you always have to be prepared for what might come your way whether you are expecting it or not, and this goes alongside any job so it is an essential skill to have obtained.
